Karl-Heinz Umbach, born October 18, 1944 in Stetten, Germany, passed away January 8th, 2021 in Altoona, FL.
After receiving his PhD in Solid State Physics in Stuttgart, Germany he joined the Hohenstein Institute in Germany in 1976. Their designs have contributed to improving fabrics used in sports, safety, military, and space. He was associated with the University of Stuttgart and University of Kassel in Germany, as well as an adjunct Professor at North Carolina State University. He has also published over 200 papers and has lectured worldwide.
Growing up, he read many western stories about cowboys and Indians in America. His dream was to live here, have horses, and be a cowboy. He was known as the Professor in cowboy boots. Karl-Heinz was a very interesting person who told countless stories about his adventures of his travels all over the world.
After retiring, Karl-Heinz spent most of his time at his ranch in Altoona. Karl-Heinz was predeceased by his wife Heidrun, who was with him for 36 years. He is survived by his children Jens Umbach (Yvonne), Kirsty Schäfer (Thomas), Regina Langhauser (Jürgen), Oliver Boltz (Nadine Kirchner), and grandchildren Finn, Jannik, Anna, Moritz, Jenny, and Julian.
A graveside service will be held Saturday, January 23, 2021, 11am, at Altoona-Hinson Cemetery in Altoona, Florida with Ralph Lengemann officiating. There will be a reception to follow at KH Ranch located at 18604 Demko Road Altoona, FL 32702.
