Obituary for Edith R Mordini (Evangelista)

Edith R Mordini (Evangelista)
Edith “Edie” Mordini passed away at the age of 91 on December 1st, 2020 at AdventHealth Waterman Hospital surrounded by her family.

Edith lived a long, wonderful life. She was born in Highland Park, Illinois in 1929 to the late Carlemidio and Madelena Evangelista. She moved to Howey-in-the-Hills, FL in 1964 with her husband Joe and first child, Joey, so Joe could start a new job at the Floridian Country Club (now Mission Inn Resort & Club). This move took her away from her family, which was hard for her but the Howey residents welcomed her warmly even though she was much younger than the average resident was at that time. During her first couple of years in Howey she was busy with her new baby boy and helped Joe at the Country Club. Eventually she started her own career at Matsche Construction Co. as a Bookkeeper/Secretary where she worked for 30 years. After retirement and the passing of her beloved husband Joe (1998) she volunteered for 10+ years at Special Olympics Florida and the Lake County Welcome Center. She enjoyed helping others and greeting visitors to Lake County. This was also the time her grandchildren would start arriving which made her later years so exciting and full of joy. She would always ask the grandkids if they wanted to go “bumming”, and she would take them shopping, driving until she was 90. It was obvious her children and grandchildren were the most important part of her life, her love and care always unconditional. She enjoyed spending time with her children and grandchildren and never declined when asked to babysit. Edith loved the Florida sunshine and spent most summers at New Smyrna Beach. She loved to cook awesome Italian food for family and friends and baked cakes often for her local first responders.

She is survived by her son Joey Mordini of Howey-in-the-Hills, FL, daughter Carla (Carlos) Benavides of Fleming Island, FL; five grandchildren – Jackson, Cory, Gabrielle, Josslyn and Joanee and one brother - Benny Evangelista of Kenosha, WI. She is also survived by several nieces and nephews, grand nieces and nephews and great-grand nieces and nephews all who have been a very special part of her life. In addition, a very special friend, Jill, survives her. Jill was a true blessing who checked on Edith every day, offering encouragement, sharing prayers and taking her wherever she wanted to go when she could no longer drive.

At Edith’s request, there will be no service. Thanks to all of her friends and family who contributed to her long, wonderful life. If you would like to honor Edith, the family requests donations in her name to Special Olympics Florida, 1915 Don Wickham Drive, Clermont, FL 34711.
