Obituary

Alice R. Schofer, 87, of Leesburg, passed away peacefully at home on Sunday morning, September 6th, 2020.

Born December 4, 1932 in Utica, NY, she was the daughter of Helen Swald and Carl Buttenschon. Alice lived in the Utica area until 1962, when she moved with her husband and three children to Wappingers Falls, NY. She was married to Donald F. Schofer for 45 years until his passing in 2002.

Alice enjoyed autumn weather, knitting, reading mysteries, and all kinds of theater. While residing in Wappingers Falls, she spent many years volunteering as a Sunday School teacher, a Roy C Ketcham band parent, and as a driver and secretary for the Klokken Ringers handbell choir of the New Hackensack Reformed Church. After Alice’s children were grown, she went to work for Howland/Steinbach for several years, where she happily took advantage of her employee discount on costume jewelry and clothing.

Alice relocated to Arlington Ridge Community in Leesburg, Florida in the spring of 2019, and loved going for golf cart rides and watching the sandhill cranes, golfers, and palm trees.

Alice is survived by three children: son Larry Schofer & daughter-in-law Michele Heiland of Louisville, KY; son Cliff Schofer & daughter-in-law Lori of Ellington, CT; and daughter Judy Goldberg & son-in-law Mark of Leesburg, FL. Alice also leaves five beloved grandchildren: Daniel Schofer (& wife, Lynn), Connor Goldberg, Anna Schofer, Brendan Goldberg, and Nathan Schofer; one particularly adorable great granddaughter, Aubrey Schofer; and several nieces and nephews.

A private memorial will be planned at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation in her memory to The Majestic Theater at majestictheater.com .
Online condolences may be left at www.beyersfuneralhome.com Arrangements entrusted to Beyers Funeral Home and Crematory, Leesburg, FL.

Larry, Cliff and Judy,

We were so sorry to hear about the passing of your Mom. Alice holds a special place in our hearts. She was always so friendly and caring. She always took the time to ask about your life and you knew she was really interested in what you had to say. There where many times when I would always bump into her at Adams. Of course we would get the looks from other customers to move on as our conversation would flow a little too long! She was part of a very special group of people from NHRC.

Along with Cliff Larry and Judy, my teen years were spent being among the chosen few dozen that had the privilege of bringing handbells and traveling the country with the Klokken Ringers. Alice was So much more than just a chaperone, and her spirit and ever present smile or so wonderful. One memory in particular was the first time I went to the Bavarian Beer Fest At the new Hackensack fire house. She and I danced a couple of polkas together! The first time I ever did that!

Dear Judy, Cliff and Larry,
I hosted Betty Hotchkiss in Tallahassee this past February and had the most delightful conference call with your mom. We howled as we remembered bell trip shenanigans and the memorable characters in all those choirs. What a great ride throughout those years!
I loved your mom. She devoted countless hours to our musical activities and became a parent to us all. I think the car companies had bell choirs in mind when they designed those station wagons.
I'm thinking of you all as you navigate through this enormous loss. All my love, Anne
