Henry “Coy” McCoy Goodwin Sr. of Lake Panasoffkee died on 03/18/2020 in Sumterville, Florida surrounded by family.

He was better known as Coy or Chief to his family and friends. Coy has moved on to that pasture in the sky to help God herd his cattle in heaven. Coy was a retired Navy Chief Petty Officer, retired law enforcement/corrections officer of the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office, devoted husband, father, friend and rancher.

He is survived by his wife of 58 years of marriage (Dee Goodwin), by his daughter Debbie Goodwin Moffitt (Justin) and his son Hank Goodwin (Kelly). His other relatives are Colt Wells, Kirsti Merritt/Jessmer, Bryce Goodwin, Tuff Wells, Scott Parker, Ann Hunt, Sharon Maddox, Danni Scott, Amy Maze and a large number of extended family and friends.

Coy was basically a lifelong resident of Sumter County, FL other than his service in the US Navy. He was born in Bushnell and will be laid to rest at the Florida National Cemetery.

Coy retired as a rancher of 44 years, from the US Navy after 20 years of service to his country and retired from The Sumter County Sheriff’s Office after 18 years as the Jail Administrator. He affectionately called the jail the “Sumter County Hotel”. Coy also served on the Sumter Fair Association for 9 years and served as Vice President. He was the first chairman of the Sumter Market Swine Show. He served our country and our county with pride and dignity.

Please take this time to remember those that we have lost and cherish those love ones we have in our life today. Never take any day for granted!

In Lieu of Flowers; please donate to the Florida Sheriff’s Youth Ranch or Wounded Warrior Project.

A private family service will be held and then a Celebration of Life service will be held at a later date.

My thoughts and prayers are with you Dee, Hank, Debbie and all the family. My memories of Coy go back to the days when he became the Chief over the county jail and turned that facility around. He and Dee were also involved in politics and if you had those two in your corner, you were a winner! Best to all the family. Guy Simmons
