John Leroy Leininger, Sr., 66, passed away peacefully on August 8, 2019 at his home in Tavares, Florida surrounded by his wife and children. Born on February 11, 1953 in Clermont, Florida, John grew up on Pine Island Lake where he loved to fish with his Grandpa Roy. John graduated from Groveland High School in 1971. While attending Lake-Sumter Community College, he met his wife Patty.
From a very young age John was involved in the citrus industry. Through the years he worked in citrus, construction, mechanics and was always raising a steer in the back pasture along with other livestock. For 20+ years, John taught Hunters Education programs for the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission. His efforts helped to continue the heritage of hunting in Florida by developing safe, responsible and knowledgeable hunters.
John is preceded in death by his parents Bobby and Lorene Leininger and grandparents Roy and Ruby Leininger. He is survived by his wife of 47 years Patricia, daughters Jennifer Collins (Sean) and Erin Renae, son Lee and grandson Michael John Collins. Sister Marjorie Berry (Rick), brothers Chester (Kerri) and Henry along with numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

John was the first friend I made when we arrived in Florida almost 40 years ago. He was someone you could call in the middle of the night and he’d say on my way, didn’t matter what you needed. We fished, hunted, camped and celebrated holidays together. To many memories to list but one was playing Pepper at Stavropol waiting for our pizza.
Our families were very close until time and life drifted us apart. I feel as if I have lost a brother. Our prayers to the family.
I’m sure his first word when he entered God’s kingdom was “ Howdy “ .

My heart is heavy as I fight back the tears, but my thoughts are full of all the magnificent memories of how passionate John was teaching others about the outdoors. I miss you buddy and thanks for the memories. Greg Workman
